Samosajja - Radio SARANG's RJ

If you don't see photographs in full, please download them to your computer for use.

23 Dec. Who in and around St Aloysius College institutions or many of the schools around, does n't know Samosa Ajja (Samosa selling Grandpa)? Or their dear Chikki ajja!?

But many don't know him to be an RJ! Radio Jockey, radio presenter for Community Radio SARANG 107.8FM.

It was in Sept. 2010, that Yours Truly, thought of requesting him to present on Radio SARANG 107.8FM a program on Mahatma Gandhi - on Gandhi Jayanthi. Interestingly, the affable Samosajja was game to it - immediately, without a second thought!

October 02 came and went. October 3rd came. The mercurial septuagenarian Samosajja, came running after me in front of the beautifully painted Chapel, as I was returning home from my Mass Communication (MCMS) Dept.

"Do you know...? I had gone to Kavoor (about 10 km away from St Aloysius). There they told me they heard my voice on your A.I.R.!!!" He face was lit brightly!

The Gandhian samosa vendor won't miss coming to St Aloysius College School to sell his eatable to schools kids, even if the most regular students miss their classes! He has been eking out his living for the last 30+ years thus, and has married off his three daughters, two sons (including re-marriage of his one son last year), and also built a house!

He is deeply a spiritual person - attributes his little success to the lovely little Chapel of St Aloysius College. Though the most-written about person in the campus and around, Samosajja is the humblest and simple person!

I learn P.R. from him: he makes it a point to gift a packet full of ground nuts to some of us Jesuits - every now and then. If he gives it to me this month, next month it is some other Jesuit's turn, and some other and some other!

Samosajja, as Mr Mallikarjuna Malagi from Baadaami in North Karnataka known affectionately, is a Gandhian. He wears the same type of mundu and shirt and Gandhi-topi. The same naam. The same simple samosa, chikki and ground nut container. Not a harsh word for any mischievous boy who tries to steal a mini-samosa from his basket!

Anytime Yours Truly requests him for RJ-ying, our Samosajja is game to it! When he gives his time, he is there present five mintues in advance! That is punctula Ajja for you! Ever since Yours Truly discovered him in 2010, Samosajja has been regular to our SARANG 107.8FM studio for a weekly RJ-ying!

Radio SARANG 107.8FM Geared Upto Women's Training - Yet Another

20 Dec. Radio SARANG 107.8FM Baseline Survey and Capacity Building Workshop conducted 12 Dec to 17 Dec 2011. Twenty three community women and mass communication students participated in this highly successful workshop.

11 Dec. Tomorrow, it's yet another milestone. When women from the neighbouring communities gather at the Community Radio SARANG 107.8FM hall (actually it is MCMS Classroom!), we would have started yet another journey - research based community content production.

Community Radio SARANG 107.8FM has been lucky this season. Dept of Science & Technology, through its wing NCSTC, selected SARANG 107.8FM to produce and broadcast health content for local communities, specially women.

In preparation for this project "Science for Women's Health and Nutrition", Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) is arranging this Baseline Survey and Capacity Building Workshop for women and student producers of this Community Radio SARANG 107.8FM.

It is a weak-long workshop involving a field survey of over 1000 households where Radio SARANG 107.8FM is listened to, then followed by a training workshop, which includes producing for radio.
